Dom Paulinus Angold
Buckfast Abbey’s Dom Paulinus Angold died in January aged 95. The oldest monk of the English Benedictine congregation, he entered the abbey in 1931 and was ordained priest in 1937. Paulinus was a last link with the founders of the abbey who began building on 12th Century foundations in 1907. Work was completed in 1938, including installation of a ring of 14 bells given by Sir Robert Harvey in 1910. A Yorkshireman by birth, Dom Paulinus became an enthusiastic ringer and was a long-time member of the Guild of Devonshire Ringers. During World War II he served as an army chaplain in Egypt and Italy. Afterwards he returned to Buckfast, serving as parish priest at Buckfastleigh and Ashburton.
