Ringing World 5132 (4 September 2009)

Front Cover: St Mary de Castro, Leicester – now ten by R. Kingsley Mason
It was in the early 1980s that a plan to augment the bells to ten was first discussed with the late Canon Clifford Carver who was our Vicar at that time.
More recently, Jean Draper, one of our ringers who was also the “flower lady” died in 2003 and on settlement of her estate, a large bequest was made to St Mary’s. It was felt by the members of the PCC that this would be a good opportunity to mark Jean’s generosity by augmenting the bells to ten and the two new bells would be paid for from the Draper bequest.

Happy Birthday Rob

Seven men and one lady met at Whichford, Warks, on June 19th to ring a celebratory quarter peal for Rob Harvey’s 91st birthday. A ringer’s 91st birthday is uncommon and certainly something to celebrate, particularly as Rob is well-known in the North Cotswolds as its ‘Grand Old Man of Ringing’. What made the event especially newsworthy was that Rob himself was one of the band. Added to this, come November, Rob celebrates 80 years an active ringer.

From the E-Lists A round-up from the internet compiled by John Camp
A correspondent asserted that the overall standard of ringing throughout the country was dreadful and that this was because of the equally dreadful standard of teaching.

Teaching Ringing IX – The Local Resources by Rt Revd Prof Barry F. Peachey
This article is the ninth in an occasional series on the theory of teaching ringing, and especially outlining the practices and philosophies adopted at the Barrow-upon-Humber Ringing Centre in northern Lincolnshire. In an earlier article in this series I wrote about Singles and Minimus and the normal conventions that have been adopted in ringing them, both historically and more recently. In this article I am going to pursue the discussion with the proposal that your local 3 and 4 bell towers are probably the most under-used training resource in your area.

Diary of a South African adventure – part 1 by Roy LeMarechal
Apr 17 Fri – Mark, Ann and I met Peter at LHR. After all the horror stories surrounding its opening, T5 is now a very pleasant experience. We were soon joined by Jim, Andrew and Joanne before we headed off to the Wetherspoons. Met up with Tudor and John Jelley in the departure lounge. Boring flight. Ann was given a free pair of 1st class pyjamas after she parked a glass of red wine in her lap.

Thought for the week
‘We might get a few complaints – but, well, we are used to those, and it really doesn’t hurt them be reminded that the Church is still here now and then!’

Many Happy Returns at Inveraray
We wonder how many married couples first met on a ringing weekend, rang their first peal together, and came back 30 years later and rang a quarter peal, (Bob Royal), with two of the original band and others to mark their anniversary. It all happened to Eric and Trish on the magnificent 10 bells at Inveraray.
