Front cover: Stephen Wood by John Eisel
Stephen Wood was the son of the Vicar of Almondsbury, and was born in 1906. He learned to ring in 1917, the year in which he joined the Gloucester and Bristol Diocesan Association as a member of Almondsbury tower, although his name does not appear in an annual report until that for 1920, the first report that was issued after 1915.
From the E-Lists
Taylors may have been rescued and the London 12-bell competition contested and won, but it was good to learn, from the ANZAB list, that St Mary's, Sydney, now has a working buzzer.
Salisbury D.G. report
Satellite Navigation Systems and Ordnance Survey Maps were certainly put to full use on Saturday, 15th August by visitors, and indeed even some of our Guild members, seeking the more remote towers of West Dorset. Even so, there were reports of cars driving down the same lanes several times in order to ring at specific destinations. This was the occasion of the Open Day, held annually by the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers, and hosted this year by the West Dorset Branch.

South Stoke tenor bell celebrations and flower festival
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend celebrations were held to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the casting and installation of our tenor bell. Over the three afternoons that the tower and church were open we had in excess of 100 people visiting the clock room and belfry. Many more viewed the flowers in the main body of the church, including an almost life-sized bell made in flowers.
Long length attempt at Heptonstall

A grant of £22,600 has been awarded to enable five historic bells to be restored and re-hung, a new ringing floor and lighting to be installed and a range of resources purchased.
Ringing Mayor of Elmbridge
In May this year James Vickers, a ringer at St. Mary’s, Stoke D’Abernon in Surrey, was elected as the 2009/2010 Mayor of Elmbridge, the local government borough in which Stoke D’Abernon sits.
CC Bell Restoration Committee
I recently became Chairman of the Central Council Bell Restoration Committee. The context was not what I would have wished for, as it resulted from the sad loss of Carol Hardwick. I hope very much to keep up the good work of Carol, and Kate Flavell before her, but one of the challenges I am facing is a shortage of resources. We were under strength even before the loss of Carol and at the last Council meeting we were unable to secure any more members.
Harold Parkinson – 100 and still keeping an eye on us
In 2009 Harold Parkinson of Bacup, Lancashire, achieved two notable milestones – 70 years’ membership of the Lancashire Association and, in August, his 100th birthday.
A Singapore first?
Hong King Wu found his way into the Learners’ Practice at St Giles-in-the-Fields when he joined the St Martin’s Singers for their practice earlier this year. HK (as he became known) hails from Singapore and was studying for an M.Sc. at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine when he decided to learn to ring.
Grandsire Pig
I thought your readers might like to see how one of our young ringers learnt Grandsire Doubles.
She converted it into a picture of a pig.
