Ringing World 5166 (30 April 2010)

Stephen Ivin, who died on January 7th 2010, aged 72, was without doubt one of the greatest ringers of his generation. Not only did he possess very considerable abilities in performance – as a composer, conductor and heavy-bell ringer – but he was equally a master of his instrument, with very extensive theoretical, technical, and practical knowledge of the tuning, dynamics, and hanging, of bells; subjects in which he was widely recognised as an authority, and on which he was often consulted.

Easter Monday Open Day at Stourton
Every Easter Monday for the last twenty years or so, the Mere Branch of the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers has held an Open Day at St Peter’s church Stourton (6 bells, tenor 11-2-0 in F#).

Naming St Valentine by Robin Woolley
Andy Jobson (RW 5159/260) raises some interesting questions concerning the Decisions on Method Naming and Extension. Before we go any further, let us examine the two methods in quo.

The day we went to Pershore – take two
By Rachel Vessey – January 2010
The excitement started to build, as the ringing outing beckoned
Two feet of snow would not stop the bell ringers for a second
So we all wrapped up warm, in layers of four or five
And piled into our cars for the long and snowy drive

As many of you will know we at Wantage tower lost our Ringing Master Peter Davies to cancer earlier this year. This was a great shock and a great loss to us all, and to many others within the ringing community, and we wanted to do something to honour and remember Peter, in order to give ringers who knew and loved him the opportunity to pay their respects, and celebrate his life.

University of Surrey Society of Change Ringers Dinner 2010
Back in May 2009 the USSCR current students had a meeting to round up the year and it was decided that we should have another society dinner in February 2010. As the others at the meeting were leaving Guildford, it was passed on to me to organise the dinner. So planning went underway and suggested dates were e-mailed out. Once a consensus of a date was decided the venue was booked and I thought no more about it for several months. After a while towers became booked for a peal and some general ringing, and numbers started increasing.

Thought for the week
Many of us, I am sure, taking part in a ringing outing or full-scale tour to distant churches will have paused to look at picture postcards for sale on the church bookstall. It is good to send one or two to members of the family or fellow ringers, with a brief message about the weather, or the standard of striking – a ‘wish you were here’ message, perhaps!

We are pleased to publish alongside this edition the annual Central Council Supplement. This highlights the work of the Council during the past year and contains all of the papers required by Council members at its forthcoming meeting on Monday, 31st May 2010.
