exterior west-end & tower The first ‘Ringing World National Youth Contest’ will take place from 10am on Saturday, 26th March 2011 as a major part of the Ringing World’s Centenary Day. This eight bell striking contest is an exciting opportunity for bands of ringers aged under 19 years (on 26th March) who may choose to ring Triples, Major or Call Changes.

Our Chief Judge is Simon Linford, a well known author of RW articles and Past Master of the Ancient Society of College Youths. Band performances will be assessed against others in the same category. There will be prizes for individual categories and a trophy crafted by Whitechapel for the overall winners. Results will be delivered during the grand reception at Central Hall, Westminster, and this will be followed by an award ceremony.

St Saviour’s Church is in St George’s Square, Pimlico, London SW1. The church, built in the Victorian Gothic style, was finished in 1864 but did not have a ring of bells for over a hundred years. In 1992 the present 7-1-20 cwt ring of eight in G was installed by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. The back six came from St Mary’s, Peterborough and were cast by John Warner & Sons in 1887 and two Whitechapel trebles cast in 1890 were added to complete the pleasant light eight. Now in the 21st century the first ‘RW National Youth Contest’ will be held on these bells.

Pimlico underground station is 100 metres away from St Saviour’s Church. Victoria mainline station is within walking distance. The Abbey and Central Hall, Westminster, are just up the road. Refreshments will be available near St Saviour’s throughout the contest.
